College “VS” University

First off I don’t think you can put these two in a boxing ring to fight it out! Either choice is a good choice when you are thinking of furthering your education.  The main difference between a College and a University is the degree possibilities along with a University being made up of various colleges and schools.  If you were to attend lets say the University of Michigan this is the sample list of the following colleges available to choose your major.  The Stephen A. Ross School of Business, College of Pharmacy, A. Alfred Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, and the College of Engineering the list goes on and on giving you an extensive selection of degrees.

Most universities have programs to further your education to receive your master’s degree or PhD.  Yes, I would say in general a university is larger then most colleges with a larger student body and because of the larger selection of degrees possibly you will find more students attending a university.  Is it possible for a college to become a university?  Yes it is both Robert Morris University and Whitmore University changed their status from college to university just in the past few years.  This change in name gives the school greater focus on their reputation of service and status giving them greater stability in furthering their educational boundaries.

Colleges on the other hand tend to be smaller in student count along with building and property area.  A college will not give you the opportunity to further your degree past a four year bachelors.  But location to your approximate area is more likely to be a college then university.  There are exceptions to this rule but in general your choice of colleges will be more abundant if you want to go locally to school.   Another aspect when choosing which one you should pick to further your education is that most universities will have a more open class schedule plan.  Meaning colleges will not give you a wide variety of days and hours certain classes are available.  This will also depend on the type of college you choose as a technical college or business college might give you a wider choice of times and day’s classes are available.

Many universities will have larger classes with 200 to 300 students in a lecture hall and colleges having smaller more personalized learning.  To choose the right one for you can take some research on your part, but don’t forget the quality of the education.  Who will be teaching at the school?  Many colleges will have teachers that have personal experience working in that field but are not necessarily trained to teach students.  Depending on how you learn can be one of the aspects you might think about when it comes to researching the college or university you want to go to.

One of the more important aspects between choosing a college or university is that in general a university has a coveted preferred education when it comes to employment.  Many companies will pick a university educated candidates over a college educated one.  And example would be if you have two people applying for the same job and one went to the University of Richmond and one went to Richmond College the employer would probably choose the candidate that went to the University of Richmond feeling they had gotten a better education.  I don’t feel this is true but when it comes to employment opportunities you may have a leg up if you attended a university.

Both colleges and universities can be private institutions therefore will qualify for different grants and scholarships.  Always look into what financial aid programs the school has to offer.  In general universities tuition costs are higher they may have many more options when it comes to financial aid.  Planning ahead can save you thousands of dollars when it comes to furthering your education.  Checking for all the diverse scholarships available today can save you money along with letting you have a wider selection of the schools you want to attend.

So remember researching all the colleges and universities that offer the subject or career that interests you do not leave any stone unturned.  Being prepared and knowledgeable about the infinite possibilities you have when it comes to furthering your education.
