What is a Community College?

A community college is a two year college or less where you can receive a certificate or associates degree in hundreds of different subjects.  Most community colleges are the first step of a four year bachelor’s degree or higher.  When you’re thinking of furthering your education whether just out of high school or in your later years adding to your education a community college is a wise choice.

Historically most community colleges are located hence say in a community so they will be right in your neighborhood.  Starting in the 20th century the popularity of community colleges became prevalently scattered all over the United States.  A community college is a good choice for the graduating high school student that isn’t quite sure what they want to study.  They can then take many of their required courses at the local community college while taking their time to decide just what they want to study.  Many students have to continue to work while still trying to further their education so a community college should be considered as most do offer evening and sometimes weekend classes.

Community colleges have become very well rounded in their selection of majors obtainable to students.  Many offer the same choices as a four year college or universities giving you the first two years of required courses accessible right in your local area.  So being able to pursue your studies on a part time basis is a great option when you attend a community college.  Always be cautious when you are registering for classes, making sure that the classes you are paying for are transferable to the four year college or university you hope to attend in the future. This is a very big concern and should be investigated extensively before signing up for classes.

Living on campus is not and option when attending a community college as they do not provide dormitories or apartments for students.  They may not offer extracurricular programs such as music, band, sports or drama so if these are any of the things you want at a college community college may not be the right choice for you.  Still there are many good reasons to attend a community college in your area. Pervious academic performance is not considered when you attend a community college and stiff rules do not apply you need only to fill out and application.  This will not be true of all private community colleges that may set up there own set of requirements and admission policies.

Cost is a major factor when looking for schools.  Traditionally most community colleges will be less expensive then a four year university or college.  Being a resident of a community can also factor in on the cost per credit hour to attend a community college.  Comparing two schools for example both in the state of Michigan: Macomb Community College cost for a non resident $128.00 a credit hour. Cost for a resident $84.00 a credit hour.  Compare this to another school located in Michigan, Wayne State University resident cost is $287.00 per credit hour and non resident is $657.00 a credit hour.  WOW twice the cost of a community college.  Every school will differ but if you are struggling to afford college checking your local community college will save you thousands of dollars.

Which ever you choose, furthering your education is always a wise decision and making and informed and educated choice will help.  The more you know about choosing a college the easier it will be to make the right choice for you.  Going to college is a stressful event in anyone’s life but being knowledgeable about the college you choose will make this life changing event easier.
